The Voicemails I'll Never Stop Playing: My Son's Audio Guest Book Story

I've worked at After The Tone for more than three years now, helping couples, families, and companies rent our vintage rotary phones so their guests can leave voicemails at weddings, showers, birthdays, and everything in between. I've lugged around more rotary phones than I can count, and listened to more heartfelt messages than any old school answering machine. But nothing prepared me for how much it would mean to gather my own audio guest book messages for the number one person in my own life: my son.

Our son, Finnegan, was a complete, joyful shock. My then-boyfriend, now-husband Kevin and I found out we were pregnant and decided to do things a little out of traditional order: we got engaged and married at the courthouse within the first few months, all before we'd even had time to catch our breath. By the time the baby shower rolled around, we decided to combine it with the engagement party we never got to have. We landed on "Here Comes The Son" as our theme, partly because yellow is just a happy color, and partly because it felt decently vibe-neutral since we were combining multiple celebrations. I wore white in true engagement party fashion, and we packed 90 people into that celebration. Sun rays on the invitations, yellow and white everywhere, and of course, a yellow rotary phone sitting on the gift table with a sign inviting guests to leave a voicemail for our baby on the way.

I'd set up dozens of audio guest books for other people's events, but standing back and watching my own mom, my best friends, and my now father-in-law pick up that yellow receiver and talk to my unborn son was something else entirely. Some guests laughed through their messages. A few cried. It was a surreal experience watching my two worlds collide.

That's the part people don't always expect from a phone guest book. It's not just messages for the guest of honor. It becomes a time capsule for the whole family.

Pressing His Story Onto Vinyl

Here's the part of this story I'm most excited to share, because it's genuinely one of my favorite things we offer at After The Tone: custom vinyl records made from the actual voicemails.

I had the recordings from both events pressed onto a one of one vinyl record made just for Finnegan. Side A is every voicemail from his baby shower, all those early hopes and welcomes recorded before he ever took a breath. Side B is every voicemail from his first birthday, a full year of him existing in the world, wrapped up in the voices of the people who love him.

I can't fully put into words what it's like to hold that record. Someday when he's older, I'm going to hand him that record and let him hear, in his own family's voices, what it sounded like the moment everyone found out he was coming, and the moment he turned one.

I've watched the wedding side of our business grow steadily over the past few years, but the baby shower and baby birthday space in particular has exploded recently. I think it makes sense.
